Discussion:
Chopper Control Modules

Has anyone experienced repeated CCM failures? I have several units that have had the CCM replaced six and seven times. Some will fail within hours/days of replacement. Others have only been replaced once and has lasted for three years and counting. Proffessional tech, only tech at location. Batteries do not appear to be the cause as they rotate between units. All ESD procedures followed. No shorts to frame Static straps in place and clean. Any input would be appreciated. What do you think Carl?

Has the rest of the Q1 circuit been tested/inspected as well? If I remember correctly they are RayCats, and the Q1 circuit could be causing the repetative faults, R-1, Rec1 etc. I'd be looking very hard at the rest of the circuit expecially with the 20 series codes, and q-1 not beeing at fault. On a raymond at the minimum q-1 and rec1 are changed together.

Below is the breakdown in order of replacement.Only last two of s/n listed. Tom has the complete list, with dates and meters.

---89 ---93 ---95 ---98 ---99
3 CCM 7 CCM 1 CCM Q1+CCM 2 CCM
Q1+CCM no Q1 Q1+CCM 1 CCM Q1+CCM
3 CCM 1 CCM 3 CCM
Q1+CCM

On the next failure I will replace as a set, unless I hear otherwise. (as a test) Thanks for the reply.

Has the Q1 been replaced on any of the repeat failure units?
Short between Collector and Base will send hard voltage back to the CCM and knock it out. Q1 may test OK with the static test, but may short under load.

Batteries, the life blood of an EC unit. Yes, the customer has batteries that need replaced.Unfortunately as an outside contractor I can not make the customer do anything. Back to the subject-no i have not tested and recorded unloaded vs loaded battery voltages (that will now be a part of the repair and documentation process). Yes it is possible that this is part of the problem. I have 14 units of this model, they are divided into two groups. One group has designated units, batteries and chargers. In this group the following CCM failures have been experienced: 6 units total
1 unit 0 CCM failures
2 units 1 CCM failure
1 unit 2 CCM failures
1 unit 3 CCM failures
1 unit 7 CCM failures
All of these units are 4 years old as are the batteries and chargers.
The next group uses batteries from the random customer pool (possible battery condition)
5 units 0 CCM failures
1 unit 1 CCM failure
1 unit 6 CCM failures
1 unit 7 CCM failures
Please note that the 5 units with no CCM failures are from a seperate S/N group than all of the other units listed,

Thanks for the reply. Failure codes 23 (open in drive arm); 40 (m detected closed); 44 (pc detected closed). Failure determined by failing ramp test (Od); testing with known good compoment - as far as intial experiance for codes 40,44.Some failures are related to Q1 failure and testing CCM (ramp test) Before connecting collector lead to new Q1. Other times on 23 Q1 will pass and the CCM fails ramp test. Dry and climate controlled 1M sq ft dist center. Floors good except at fire door joints where some repair should be done. Housekeeping is better than most.

Fact of the week
In 1923, French tennis player René Lacoste was promised a crocodile leather suitcase by his captain if he won his next match. He lost the match but won the nickname "the crocodile" which he had sown onto his tennis attire. Ten years later he launched the first polo shirt and Lacoste, the first brand to feature a logo on its clothing.
