APM Terminals has ordered 240 pieces of container handling equipment for five of its terminals in Latin America, Africa and Europe over the past few months.
The company, a unit of AP Moller-Maersk, says the new equipment is bound for APM Terminals Maasvlakte II in the Netherlands, APM Terminals MedPort Tangier in Morocco, Côte d’Ivoire Terminal in West Africa, APM Terminals Lazaro Cardenas in Mexico, Suez Canal Container Terminal in Egypt and the upcoming terminal in Suape, Brazil.
“To serve our customer's needs and realise our growth strategy for APM Terminals, we are ramping up our capacity with cutting-edge products and technology,” says Olaf Gelhausen, chief operating officer at APM Terminals.
“The agreements we have signed with ZPMC, Sany, Kuenz, Shacman and ABB will help us drive efficiency and sustainability in our operations.”
Chinese crane manufacturer ZPMC will deliver 12 ship-to-shore cranes to APM Terminals Maasvlakte II, four ship-to-shore cranes for APM Terminals MedPort Tangier, two ship-to-shore cranes and nine rubber-tyred-gantry cranes for Côte d’Ivoire Terminal, six automated rail mounted gantry cranes and 14 one-over-one hybrid straddle carriers for APM Terminals Lazaro.
China’s Sany will deliver two remotely operated ship-to-shore cranes, seven remote controlled rubber tyred gantry cranes, two electric reachstackers, two electric empty container handlers, one electric forklift and 14 electric terminal tractors to APM Terminals Suape, which is expected to begin operations in 2026.
“In Suape, we are developing a state-of-the-art facility with great connectivity for the Brazilian northeast region,” Gelhausen says.
“Being the first 100% electric terminal in Latin America, our goal is to provide safe, competitive and environmentally friendly solutions that will generate an outstanding experience for local customers.”
APM Terminals signed the orders with ZPMC and Sany in April, a month after placing equipment orders with Chinese terminal tractor maker Shacman, Sany and Austrian crane maker Kuenz and electrification company ABB.
Kuenz and ABB will deliver 62 automated rail mounted gantry cranes and one intermodal yard crane for the expansion of Maasvlakte II.
The agreement is APM Terminals’ largest crane order in Europe to date and will help double capacity in the terminal by 2027.
Meanwhile, Shacman will deliver 90 terminal tractors and Sany will deliver five empty container handlers, four reach stackers, three forklifts to the Suez Canal Container Terminal to expand its capacity by 2 million TEUs.
