The news that Hoist is to go electric on their trucks will put Toyota way infront of the like of KION, Kalmar , NACCO.
Hoist has got the jump on these in the US now and because Toyota use Hoist trucks they have benefited from this
We have no idea which way the industry will go. While one man is investing all in developing a better hot air balloon the next one invents the plane leaving the balloon worthless. Toyota Can spend their fortune researching a certain technology just to have a better technology appear out of left field rendering Toyota's technology worthless.
The future is just a speculation thus it's a gamble.

The way things are going and the improvement of electric counter balance forklifts it quite a good assumption that the market will grow towards electric trucks. The North American ports are now looking at going all electric in the coming years for all their equipment and the market share for North America is around 60 percent now electric on counter balance forklift. The only real market for IC will be China and these will be manufactured by local manufactures
Electric in the last couple of years have made large improvements in efficiency, the only problem is the infrastructure and battery limitations but hydrogen fuel cell technology will change this and over time electric will be a lower overall life time cost compared to IC forklifts
a couple of years ago i would have fully agreed that electric would never take over IC as the main supplier of power for counter balance forklifts. now with the improvements and new technologies its only a matter of time even in larger forklifts it will all go electric in some way either battery or Hydrogen fuel cell
25 years ago we were told that by 2000 75% of all counterbalanced would be electric... Didn't happen. When I was in grade school they told us we would be driving flying cars... Didn't happen. As fast as we think things will change they seldom follow our beliefs.
We can argue about the past and the present but not about the future. We don't know what the future will be.
you will see that Toyota are light years ahead in electric as well. were they are now and were they will be tomorrow is very different. Toyota are the leaders in Hydrogen fuel cell light counterbalance forklifts. By 2023 to 2025 the counter balance forklift market will be 80 percent electric type product either battery or hydrogen
Toyota is pretty strong in ICE but light years away in electric equipment.
Toyota group will make a couple of acquisitions over the next couple of years to put them way in front of all competitors, firstly there is the purchase of vanderlande then there will be the purchase of Hoist lift trucks next year this will allow Toyota to cover every aspect of materials handling from a automated parcel sorting up to container handling reach stackers. When you add this to their technology improvements Toyota will increase their market share
