Discussion:
Clark C500Y40 won't lift

I'm going to look at a C500Y40 for sale. I am being told it will only lift half way then stops. I also just found out the mast cylinder is leaking. I am assuming it is low on hydraulic fluid and there is not enough fluid to fill the cylinder to raise it fully. In my past experiences a hydraulic pump either works or is does not. So I am thinking the problem is not a pump. Am I right? What should I look for when I go to look at it? Also I can not find any specs on this model. What type of trans will it have? Thanks

You're going to have to look at it, most all of them had a lift cylinder with 4 shafts. Most any repair service is going to want to pull the whole cylinder out and rebuild it. It is possible to just replace one seal if it only has one leaking, without taking it out of the forklift, if you can find someone to do that. I would guess $1000 for a complete rebuild. A pneumatic forklift like that, that can start up and be used maybe worth $1000-1500 ??

Does it have the type of cylinder that has a piston that extends out each end? What would be an average cost to reseal the cylinder?
When you mentioned not worth much with a leaking cylinder are you talking in the hundreds with average wear? Thanks

You are probably right about it being low on oil causing it to not go up all the way. Repairing the leak in the lift cylinder is a big deal. It's not easy. Also brake repairs are are very involved on that model. I would look for any other leaks that it has and make sure it runs and travels ok. That is a very old model and not worth very much with a lift cylinder leak.

Fact of the week
Funerals in Spain typically occur within 24 to 48 hours of death, whereas in other European countries they wait one or more weeks. This rapid timeframe is a cultural norm grown from the past need to manage the warm climate without modern embalming.
