O.K., Got this starting probelm with my 1950's Clark model c40mb-193-782 wondering if someone can help. Details are such.
Try to start and clicking noise from starter, keep trying and after several tries it might catch. I assume solenoid or starter motor problem. Took starter out. What is the appropriate move from here? Rebuild this starter including new solenoid? or buy aftermarket starter? Is there a starter rebuild kit with bushings, bearings, solenoid and where would I find parts? What do you think and thanks for the advice.

Thanks for the reply! If I remember correctly the issue turned out to be the ignition switch
I believe your model would be a C30MB- which, if correct, would put your starter on the lower right side of the engine (as seated), with the solenoid mounted on the starters top or bottom (depending on the mounting). The neutral safety switch is mounted on the top of the trans- close to where the directional linkage attaches to the trans.
As stated, most times a "clicking" is low battery voltage to the starter. I personally by-pass the electrical system of the truck altogether by using a jumper battery directly to the starter (with the unit's battery disconnected) to test the starter. If the unit turns over well with the jumper battery set up, then a connection issue is present in the wiring of the unit.
Can you guys tell me where the solenoid and where the neutral safety switch is on an early Clark? I have clicking too. If I determine it is the starter do I have to jack the truck up to get it out or can I get to it from the top? I believe it is a G30MB lift and I believe the engine is 4 cylinder Continental.. Thanks!
in all likelyhood it might be just the starter solenoid
but here recently i had learned a valuable lesson about that
so as edward mentioned , please do check the voltage from the start circuit and make sure you do not have any other high resistance points such as bad keyswitch or neutral start switch or even bad wiring in the start circuit. My experience wound up being some bad connections at the neutral safety switch which lead me around in circles after 2 starters and a battery cable end replacement. I was getting an intermittant voltage drop in the circuit that caused the starter to seem to fail (the perverbial clicking). I replaced the connectors on the wires at the neutral safety switch and the truck has started flawlessly ever since.
so......
- load test the battery to make sure its good
- make certain there are no bad conncections anywhere in the circuit
if in the end it winds up being a bad starter solenoid then by all means go have it rebuilt or install a reman aftermarket one if one is available.
good luck :o)
I would take this starter to my local starter re-builder and let them have a go at it, it is mostly parts that are stuff they may have on the shelf.
although, the symptoms you mention are more often caused by dirty battery posts and terminals, so I would have been tempted to test with a meter for voltage drops before I pulled the starter out.
Forget to mention, battery is good, recently charged, and I cleaned all the connections, new ignition switch last year, cables are not the best but I believe o.k., now that the starter is out I will replace the cables but still feel the starter or selonoid is at fault. I will keep checking but getting ready for an overhaul of the starter. Should I rebuild including a new solenoid, or put just a solenoid, or buy an aftermarket? Where can I find a rebuild kit and/or solenoid? Thanks
What condition is the battery in? Is it fully charged? What condition are the cables and wires from the Battery to the starter/solenoid,if they are corroded could be your problem? Are you getting full voltage from the start switch(keyswitch) to the start side of the solenoid? I wouldnt rule out the starter as being bad just yet without checking this first.
