Växjö-headquartered JLT Mobile Computers is collaborating with Sweden’s Linnaeus University to develop Screen Blanking, an AI-driven safety application which, it says, reduces driver distraction and enables compliance with some evolving global regulations.

The system uses AI and machine learning to automatically blank the display of vehicle-mounted computers when the vehicle is moving. When the vehicle stops, the display is restored.

“Vehicle-mounted computers are essential tools in industrial operations, but active screens can divert attention from driving tasks,” states JLT, which develops computing solutions for rugged terrains.

“This addresses legal requirements in some regions where such measures are mandated, while also enhancing operational safety in warehouses, logistics hubs, and industrial facilities.”

Research by JLT and Linnaeus University on the problem, used built-in motion sensors from JLT6012 computers to collect real-world movement data, to develop an optimised AI model capable of detecting vehicle motion with minimal CPU usage, while maintaining high accuracy.

Björn Lindenberg, senior lecturer in mathematics at Linnaeus University says: "For us as a leading academic institution with deep theoretical knowledge in computer science and mathematics, it's incredibly valuable to see our research applied to real-world problems”.

“This collaboration with JLT demonstrates how AI and high-performance computing can transform industrial safety,” Lindenberg adds.

The Screen Blanking application is now entering trials in live forklift operations.

Per Holmberg, CEO at JLT Mobile Computers, offers: “This project showcases how collaboration between academia and industry can lead to practical innovations that directly improve workplace safety”.

“By integrating AI into our rugged computing solutions, we're helping customers protect their most valuable asset - their people - while keeping operations efficient.”

This week’s dealer announcement from MIMA UK got us thinking about good dealer relationships. We'd like to know:

What are the ingredients of a healthy dealer partnership and a thriving dealer network?

Are you involved in building dealer relationships? We'd love to know your thoughts: drop us a line or two!

Words of support …

These releases in Forkliftaction are a nice experience for SNDC... We got seven inquiries coming from Canada, USA, Mexico, Israel and Australia (five from retailers, two from machines manufacturers) and we are still in contact with them. I can state that's a success story!
