Helping HEQ mechanic on 5 series. Starter is not smooth. Seem to buck and kick. My feeling was timing. Proved it by disconnecting ignition. Turned over fine. Set timing after TDC and starts OK. When checkin with timing light mark seems to jump around. Removed distibutor and replaced vacuum advance. Everything the same. 2 questions, any ideas on why timing changed ? Is timing set with vacuum advance hooked up or not. Looks like vacuum source is above throtle plate so should get little or no vacuum at idle. Any thoughts ??

I assume you ment to say 5FG15 and not 5FB15 which is an electric forklift. Like the gentleman said in the previous post, check the distributor gear. Nippon-Denso manufactured some soft gears many years ago. There are probably some of those still in existance.
check the distributor shaft for wear, there should be no perceptible play when you wiggle it back and forth.
I have come across this problem before, the timing gears are incorrectly set.
Remove he engine front cover and reset using the timing marks on the gears.
The timing set with the vacuum source disconnected.
The vacuum sorce is usualy fixed at the bottom of the throttle body cloe to the idle up device. But the carb could have been changed at some point.
