In my many years as a sales rep I have never sold a used battery and wont sell one. Why pay 2/3rds the price of a new battery that wont even last 3 years if your lucky. I wont sell a product I don't believe is good.

Thanks. I usually just hit my own head or at least that is what "She who must be obeyed" tells me. Then I just go outside and go for a walk with my dog.

ray tech,
I agree with you, in late 2006 sold a Clark,TM15 to a small flooring company (4-5 employees), a friend of mine, with a recondition battery & a right sized charger. They might use the lift 1 - 1.5 hours per week to load & off load flooring materials (carpet and other flooring materials). The battery company that did the battery reconditioning & charger check out was/still is very reputable. Backed up their work with a full parts & labor -1 year warranty. I instructed them on proper battery battery charging & watering techniques & when to use the "equalize" charging mode - most users when you inquire about the when they use the equalize charge mode respond with a "what's that"?. Left them a type written form of my instructions & nailed it to the wall by the charger -it is still there.
Ran in to my friend at a local golf course last month and inquired how the lift was doing. Response still running fine, battery is starting to "peter" down - won't hold a charge for very long. Not bad for almost 10 years of service. They are looking to buy another unit with a little heavier capacity as the business has picked up recently. Heck, he even bought me a beer at the 19th hole.
Many times a reconditioned battery & lift truck is over sold and represented as a being "rebuilt" like new in the wrong application along with a used oversized or undersized battery charger. A recipe for disaster. Some dealers/sales people will sell anything to make a "quick buck". My personal integrity cannot or will not be sold.
Have other examples of similar experiences.
Hung up my lift truck spurs in late 2007 after 41 years when the "big recession" hit Georgia, then new residential building (single homes & apartments) started a free fall around mid 2007 and is just starting to show signs of recovery. Didn't want to go through another 1981 slump one more time. Enough is Enough - enjoyed the journey though.

Chulho K from south Korea gave an honest opinion and I believe his assessment of rebuilt batteries is bang on.
There are customers that use their lift sparingly and would benefit from reconditioned batteries
Thank you K Chulho for the useful information

This IS a good thing, trust me.
I went to your site [genstattu dot com, if anyone wants to search for it](the first reply can see the URL, in the 'last message part of the reply window), but it seems to me your batteries are all for radio controlled devices, hardly industrial battery sizes.

Until early 2015 I was involved in a battery reconditioning shop in Korea. Please understnad I have experience with Korean customers.
The rating rule of a "good" battery should be remembered when you begin to consider the operability of a battery. The battery remnant capacity of les than 80% is NOT in good state. it works maximum 4 hours which is not good for a 'normal' shift work.
But this battery can be utilized by a small work load company who works less than hours or lighter work load. Problem is many reconditioning companies are not so frank to share with the 'sound ' information. If you have a honest reconditioners, you can enjoy the benefits. I hope this experience may help someone.

I have sold rebuilt batteries, they don't work that good, lots of complaints, its like a lottery type situation,3 out of 10 would go on for 2-3 years, others would go off 3 weeks to 3 months. They are refurbished, due to that only a maximum of 80% is restored, this means you would get 80% of new battery. that is the maximum restoration, sometimes they are only restored up to 50-60%.
I would suggest you to buy original as you would be satisfied about the authenticity.

A 80% battery is just that an 80% chunk of lead and steel worth about 2 to 3 hours of hard use before it needs recharging. I have sent out batteries out for cleaning , load test and acid adjustments. The battery company took as many a three batteries to make one good one rated at 80%. They also informed me as to the limitations of a 80% battery. I ended up having to pretty much replace all the batteries where I was the maint mananger. Replaced with DEKA batteries. Paid a little more but got it back in longer service.

Hi Don.
I am also in forklift battery recon businss in Korea. The quality issue of a battery is related to understanding of the indice such as CCA, RC ,Volt or Specific Gravity. We know that volt or SG indice is not sufficient for judging the quality of a battery. We are using RC value as a standard for judging it. RC( reserve capacity) concept is very helpful in offer of warraty. We are using RC check method instead of Volt or SG check before and after recons.
In our case individualized cell of 2volt is connected to each computer. Conventional recon machine is using just one current 48volt or 36volt by serial connection. We connect each cell to each computer. The computer tells exactly every cell's state after discharge. After recon process, we know for sure how good the cell is and how good the battery in total is. I think this kind of new battery checksing system is needed. You may see more vids on Youtube under title, "forklift battery reconditioning"-individual cell treatment system.

I recondition and sell used batteries, We market these as having 80% or better capacity with a 6 month warranty. As stated above we do not suggest that these are put into a high use application or a freezer.
We replace any cell that will not make it to 1.7v on each cell on a six hour test and we adj the gravity only when needed. We have a lot of return customers.

Mike1234;
After point and counterpoint I think that we are now on the same page.
I'm not sure how many guys out there sell forklifts and rash cream but we might be talking about the same guy.

Your not talking about the guy who sells rash cream are you? There is a guy on Ebay with 100% positive feedback and right along side of reconed forklifts, he's selling rash cream! I saw that and thought how does this guy manage to sell either one of those 2 things?! If you needed a forklift would you buy from a guy selling ointments? And if you had a rash would you buy the cream from a guy selling forklifts?!!
So your point about ebay ratings is spot on accurate.
As for rebuilt, I would agree that what most dealers sell is not rebuilt. I do think that a battery company in Michigan does cut into each cell, I could be wrong but I think they do. I know most dealers don't buy from them though because the cost is too high.
I don't know specifically how Midwest's warranty works, but we routinely warranty trucks and batteries across the country. It's a parts only warranty and the customer pays for everything else. Our warranty is usually 6 months though, not a year. Bottom line, if the battery we sell or the lift we sell is a quality product, and we do our homework and we do all the needed repairs, then the warranty should be a mute point.
I would agree though that saying "rebuilt" is a play on words and is a little less than truthful to say the least.
