old clark settings

Can anyone tell me what pressure to set the propane at the carb and how many turns on the mixture just to start out. I just finished tuning up the engine and cleaning everything out. Now the engine just starts to cough a little and then quits. I cannot seem to find close enough settings to get it running so I can fine tune it. The forklift is a clark y69 flat head I know ancient but it has been fun working on it. Thanks Rod

What kind of regulator,vaporizor and carb. do you have? Adjustment proceedures for bendix and zenith are not the same.
Are there 2 ear **** looking pieces on the regulator. The bendix regulator in the vaporizer mounted in the water outlet, sometimes has an adjustment most new vaporizors do not. The earmuff type secondary regulator needs special tools to set up.
If you have earmuff type. Remove hose from carb. see how much if any lp comes out with hose in cup of water. should not quite bubble!!
loosen screws on each side of regulator. unscrew ears. reeds in regulator are set approx. same depth as the threads on ears plus the button depressed. about.375, tighten screw against reed. do both sides. turn on lp. stick hose in water if bubbles. reeds not depressed enough. Have you confused yet? Much easieer with proper tools.
Regulator operated with engine vaccume on ears and buttons pressing reeds pulling open valve. Thats old school. Usually only a spud in carb to inject LP. Primary regulator in vaporizer should have plug to insert guage to set pressure to approx. 10 psig. or less. May be easier to convert to an Impco system.

lp pressure at carb on most lifts is 4 to 5 psi.Look for a test port on vaporizer

Thanks a bunch for the input. Can you tell me how you would measure it using water cup. I am willing to try anything at this point. I have adjusted all types of carbs on gas engines but never tried lp. I dont know if there is something wrong or I just am not getting it right. I do have two regulators that were filthy and I cleaned them both out and of course because it had been adjusted for the filth I do not know if the settings were adjusted for clean regs or dirty ones. So I put them where they were but it did not run right. Thanks Rod

thats a 4 cyl continental engine,an lp carb is adjusted........."big" screw,run it about 4 turns out and then tweek after setting the adjuster under the low pressure inlet hose,adjust that as a rule straight towards the hose,then tweek the large adjuster as needed,you will be baking bread soon. ps"lp pressure at the carb can be measured with a cup of water",now THATS old school,haha.
