Toyota 02-7FG30:
Dual fuel

Runs properly on propane, will only run on gas till choke starts to come off. This has been going on for about 5 years, now it is my turn for a kick at the can. The cylinder head had been redone, the carb replaced, managed to get my hands on the original carb and found the choke had been secured partially closed, someone came to same resolve as me and cheated to keep it running. My vacuum is good with no leaks, removed the manifolds to check for carbon build up, minimal deposits. Timing is on,new plugs, wires, rotor and cap. Yes this customer wants it to run on gas and very seldom wants to run on propane.

There is another way the solenoid may work, by shutting off the fuel to the main and pilot jets. The valve that the solenoid opens and closes may not be opening all the way. Also remember that the float bowl must be vented to the outside atmosphere and if that vent is plugged the fuel will have trouble siphoning out.

Very good explanation, but I believe it wouldn't be the cause of this issue as that solenoid would come into play with both propane & gas operation.

Makes a lot of sense.

I am not familiar with that carb either, but I am familiar in general with "anti-dieseling" solenoids.
These came into use way back (60's in Cali' and early 70's elsewhere) as a means of preventing the engine from "running on" after the engine ignition switch was cut off.
When emissions regulations caused OEMs to lean out the air/fuel ratio, combustion chamber temperatures rose significantly.
The higher CC temps would often cause the engine to continue running (though very poorly) with the diesel priciple on the idle fuel circuit still being active due to venturi vacuum applied to the pilot jet port.
The anti-dieseling solenoid was introduced to the automotive industry as a way of positioning the throttle shaft at a point that would expose the fuel pilot jet port to venturi vacuum whenever the ignition was in the start/run position, but would allow the throttle plate to drop to the fully closed position and deny vacuum to the idle fuel port in order to kill the engine in a dependable fashion when the ignition switch was turned off.

yeah i think thier terminology is 'anti-diesel' solenoid but it still controls the idle, at least thats my thinking on it. Most of the ones i've seen on any carb serve this function.

The solenoid valve you mention, I thought was part of the curb idle circuit and then someone at Toyota told me it was an anti dieseling solenoid. Thanks for the proper info on that devise. I have installed a new pump as it was at the low end of its pressure point, I am going back to the solenoid. Thanks

the anti-diesel solenoid (as you call it) is actually an idle solenoid if memory serves me correctly. I would start with that. I've seen those solenoids cause many different symptoms such as this. Also there is a toggle switch that lets you switch from gas to LP, check those circuits and make sure its activating the idle solenoid and disabling the LP lockoff and visa versa.

Then go to the fuel pump and make sure its working properly. If it runs while choked and then fails when choke pulls off it sounds as though its not getting enough fuel in gasoline mode.

My curiosity though is why would the customer want to go with gasoline when lp runs cleaner and is cheaper than gasoline?

Since there were 2 carbs having the same issue- I would check gasoline delievery to the carb. I would run the engine on LPG while the gasoline fuel line was fed into a graduated bucket to measure the amount of gasoline in a specified time & I'd check that against the spec for the gas fuel pump. Could be a faulty pump, clogged fuel filter, clogged gas tank vent or a bad cam lobe for the fuel pump- just a thought

Yeah, you need to check the jets very closely.
You can get an engine to run somewhat with a partially blocked jet......(but only to a certain load and RPM range) by shutting off some air volume with the choke. But under those conditions the carb is about 1/2 or less effective at feeding the engine, so it leans out and dies when you open the throttle.

It is a 4y engine, they use an electric lock off to shut the fuel off. There is an anti diesel solenoid on the carb.

I'm not familiar with your exact model- what engine is in the machine? How does Toyota turn off the gasoline supply while running on propane? Does the gasoline carb have any electric solenoids which activate/de-activate depending on which fuel is being used?

The bowl was clean and the float was not saturated. I checked the float height and it was correct. Will have to check the jets. Thanks
