Yeah, you need to check the jets very closely.
You can get an engine to run somewhat with a partially blocked jet......(but only to a certain load and RPM range) by shutting off some air volume with the choke. But under those conditions the carb is about 1/2 or less effective at feeding the engine, so it leans out and dies when you open the throttle.
