Four new rubber-tyred gantry (RTG) cranes will be delivered to DP World at the Port Botany terminal in the fourth quarter of 2011.

The Kalmer eight-wheeled, all-electric cranes, ordered from Cargotec, feature load capacities of 41t and the ability to stack containers 8+1 wide and 1-over-5 high.

The order follows from the delivery and operation of three Kalmar RTGs in 2006.

DP World operates terminals in Brisbane, Adelaide, Fremantle and Melbourne as well as Sydney and is a dominant terminal operator in the Australian container handling market.

According to Cargotec, one in four container movements around the globe is handled by a Kalmar machine.

Meanwhile, industrial crane supplier Konecranes will be exhibiting the safety features of its new modular crane system, Smarton, at the National Manufacturing Week in Melbourne from 24-27 May.

The crane system's compact design means it can save on building and building services costs by fitting into smaller structures.

Applications include steel and paper plants, automotive and general manufacturing, energy plants, waste-to-energy, automatic storage systems, workshops, and mining and resources facilities.

Safety features include anti-sway technology that automatically prevents the load from swaying, along with shock load prevention to prevent sudden jolts when starting lifting and during lifting with loose slings.
