Hyster has celebrated the build of the 1,000th reach stacker at its big truck factory in Nijmegen, the Netherlands.

The first Hyster reach stacker was built in Nijmegen in 1995, after the company acquired Italian company Icona's reach stacker design.

A Hyster spokeswoman says the first generation reach stacker conformed to stage I emission standards, while the 1,000th reach stacker was built according to stage IV requirements.

"Between 1995 and today, Hyster not only improved the emission standard, but also gradually changed drive technology and construction," she explains.

In 2006, Hyster completely redesigned its reach stacker. For example, the position of the cabin was moved further to the back, the lift cylinders were repositioned and the boom position raised.

In 2011, Hyster introduced what is claims was the most fuel efficient and most productive reach stacker on the market, boasting structural improvements on whole truck.

In 2014, Hyster introduced stage IV model updates, further improving on the machine's fuel efficiency.

The 1,000th reach stacker is one of three Hyster RS46-36 reach stackers that will be used at the PCH Packing Center Hamburg GmbH (PCH), in the Port of Hamburg, Germany to transport and stack shipping containers in the first, second and third rows.

"Not only is the 1,000th reach stacker build a historic event for Hyster, but it is also one of the first Tier IV Final trucks to be delivered to a customer," says Brett Schemerhorn, president of big trucks, Americas for Hyster Company.

"With the optimised 'right sized' engine, we can provide up to 25% in fuel savings compared to trucks built five years ago, while also meeting the performance and reliability requirements of Hyster customers today," Schemerhorn adds.

Hyster reach stackers have a Cummins QSL 9L engine with a peak power of 363 hp and a Dana Spicer Off-Highway TE 32 powershift transmission.

The Nijmegen plant consists of 60,000 sqm (645,835 sqft.) of buildings on 72,000 sqm (775,000 sqft.) and houses the big truck development centre, the European parts operation, test centre and shipping departments. It has over 550 employees and two training centres.
