It's been rumoured for some time, but at last there's confirmation that Briggs Equipment UK Ltd will take over UK Hyster distributor Barloworld Handling UK. This is a further step in global consolidation and while there's no suggestion that any brands will disappear, there will clearly be some rationalisation - at least at dealer level.
While these consolidations make economic sense for the manufacturers, there is a balancing act involved. It is necessary to ensure that end-user choice is not reduced, that service levels are maintained or improved and that convenience is not compromised. And, of course, there are concerns about job losses at a time when unemployment is rising.
