The Fork Lift Truck Association (FLTA) says participants in its one-day safety conference on September 27 can expect to receive "high-quality guidance and practical solutions".

Sponsored by Still Materials Handling this year, the conference is tailored for forklift owners, suppliers, site managers, operations and production managers, safety officers or the occasional forklift hirer.

Jim Corbridge, the Health and Safety Executive's (HSE) principal specialist inspector, who heads the unit responsible for HSE's position on technical forklift issues, will speak on the risks involved in forklifts in busy work environments.

Dr Uwe Weiner of IWS GmbH will present the results of his new research showing a specific danger zone where forklifts and pedestrians work together. He has evaluated possible safety solutions to reduce the risks involved.

An official from the British Nuclear Group's waste operating unit at Sellafield will present a case study of the site's day-to-day operation involving hundreds of thousands of lift operations moving nuclear and conventional loads up to 32 tonnes.

The finalists for this year's FLTA awards for excellence will present information about their products. These include a high-visibility mast, an innovative loop-based bag handling system and a truck with a revolving cab.

Briggs Equipment will mention what needs to be covered in a professional site survey and how it can make a difference.

FLTA chief executive David Ellison will be discussing some common forklift misconceptions about operating on public roads, licensing and training, work platforms and thorough examination.

Dr Will Murray of Interactive Driving Systems will offer an overview of the benefits of using online assessment system Virtual Risk Manager to assess drivers.

FLTA members get a 25% discount off the GBP120 fee for the event held at Warwick University.
