Discussion:
Unknown Model

I have a Yale that has possibly a 2.0 or 2.2 VA engine.
I need to identify this engine before tearing it down..
If you have a idea how to identify I am all ears.
Here is what I have to go on.
It is a stick shift, mazda logo on engine 4 cyl. No overhead cam. In relation to my 1985 Yale that is a 5000 lb capacity it looks as big or bigger. It is a gasoline belt drive governor. The valves where messed with. I set them at.012 , points messed with, I have them close.(matchbook) timing cover very clean, I pulled it and timing gears are steal and the mark touches. Key way is good on cam and crank. The machine acts as if out of time, will run if valves are loose.030 or more. But poorly. Someone has messed with the unit and I cannot reset valve and timing because I cannot find any info on it. If you know these older models I would like to hear from you! I am in Yale **** here.. I also posted related article in Tech forum.
Thanks, Jon

I can guess the carb kit is a Yale 9044041-00. That was used on the gas carbs from when Yale started using that engine around 1972 until the 80's. A dealer probably could show you a picture of the pieces in it or e mail the address in my member info and I can send you one to determine if it looks right.

You are kind of right. Accelerator pump isnt working, I took the carb apart and dipped it. It is completely blocked and signs of water setting in the bottom. The pump was destroyed when I took it apart this time. It is a Nikki side draft. I havent been able to locate a rebuild for it yet.
And the engine is a UA , evidently the VA uses a side valve cover and the UA doesn't. I did a leak down test again after putting transmission fluid in the holes over night. It failed miserably. So I pulled the head and found carbon heavily built up in the head and on cylinders. Someone drove it a while with this carb loading it up. Intake and exhaust ports were blocked down to the size of a nickle. So I figure ill go a oil pump and rings ,valve job, cylinder walls look good. But I will fail if I cannot find the carb or a rebuild kit. Any ideas where to look?

Maybe try to find a serial number stamped on the block to determine if it's a UA or VA. What size are the wheels? Sounds like the accelerator pump may not be working. A Yale dealer should be able to get a carb rebuild kit. A new carb would be very expensive.

How would I know VA or UA ? I did a compression test. 120 average and a leakdown test showed valves good. Or at least sealing. And showed head gasket good. Huge build up of carbon around valves from a bad carb. My model does have a mechanical fuel pump. And no writing on timing cover. Timing gears are set pointing towards together / center of gear set. I am thinking maybe I dont have a bad engine. It ran today @.015 valve lash. Carb is crap. Tried 3x to rebuild or clean it. No success. Distributer/points are set @ 30 I think. It runs, smokes fuel, crackles and dies. Will not accelerate with carb at all. When warm it doesnt want to start. I do need a side draft carb. or kit if you know of any?
Thanks , Jon

I would set the valves back to.012 and do a compression test. Should be about 140. Most likely a UA engine.
