yes!basic hand tools are important but it nmust only when you know how use it properly.

We just get shop / special factory tools, plus we have to use the company provided torque wrenches as they are calibrated regularly & records kept accordingly.

I always asked job candidates how much it would cost them if they had to replace their tools. Most people who had a small collection did not understand the question. If the answer was under $5,000 I would then ask if their tool box was bigger or smaller than my desk.
I hired a couple of guys who thoroughly lied. When they showed up for the first day of work one had purchased his brand new tools from Lowes and another had all new tools from Harbor Freight.
I do agree that having a lot of tools doesn't mean that someone knows how to use them.

I've hired guys that claim to have a starter set, yet show up with a two part, plastic marine battery cover filled with random Allen,hex, and flat drivers, a hammer, and a crescent. I've also hired guys from a construction site, who had no tools but knew how to use the tools. I've found that the guy coming from construction either loves it or hates it. If I've loves it, the transition is easy. The point is sometimes it's about the tools, but most the time it's about brain behind the tool.

I work for a firm that provides basically everything...except basic hand tools. We get $250 a year for hand tools, but you must have basic set to start. NEVER HEARD OF ANY EMPLOYER that supplies basic hand tools.
