I always asked job candidates how much it would cost them if they had to replace their tools. Most people who had a small collection did not understand the question. If the answer was under $5,000 I would then ask if their tool box was bigger or smaller than my desk.
I hired a couple of guys who thoroughly lied. When they showed up for the first day of work one had purchased his brand new tools from Lowes and another had all new tools from Harbor Freight.
I do agree that having a lot of tools doesn't mean that someone knows how to use them.
