Toyota to close Castleford site in UK

It's been announced yesterday that Toyota Material Handling will be closing their Castleford site most probably by October 2010. All new truck preparation will move to Leicester, possibly Old Dalby. Warranty will move to Warrington. The above will result in the redundancy of internal engineers, sales admin, and warranty department personnel. Sales and Marketing staff will eventually move to a small office in the Castleford area.

nearly 3 years after merger its still hard to belive that toyota bought bt and not the other way round.I belive that when things pick up there will be an exodus of people a process that has started with salespeople already.

Speaking from first hand experience since the Toyota BT merger things havent looked good for Toyota Castleford.
The staff has been gradually reduced by redundancies, systems put in place that clearly do not work.
Its obvious BT want Toyota out of the picture altogether.
How can you justify closing down a purpose built 10 yr old depot and then spend £4million extending an older depot??

There seems to be some inacurasies in your reports, the new truck opperation is going to Warrington not Leicester and there are plans to do building work there. The Castleford workshop is by far the better of all the facilities as it is purpose built but the opinion is it is too expensive to run. It looks as though it will be mothballed for the present untill the market is in a better possition. This decission was made at senior level and no real justifications have been given apart from cost saving. How did we manage before the merger.

I have to say......Who took the decision to close the Castleford engineering function down before having in place the necessary resources elsewhere?? This to me is a fundamentally flawed decision on the part of a senior management team. Whats-more, the pressure the remaining functions are going to be put under will undoubtedly strain the 'code of conduct' to its limit. I fear for the people left holding this massive problem. I think it is fair to say that however you you look at the 'Toyota way; Code of Conduct, respect, etc, in TMHUK world it is only a thin veneer covering a sad reality that the workforce is thrashed to the bone.

Thats a shame staff always come out bottom. It might help both Toyota and BT to go back to looking after there staff better. If not it will come back to haunt them later

Where did you get that from Dave160, Toyota and BT, as separate company's used to look after their staff, but now they have joined after BT were bought by Toyota things have changed for the staff from both companies.

This looks to be a bit strange as Toyota are a company who are supposed to look after there staff and the site is quite new is it even ten years old

All the staff in the depot will be effected, but they have been told that there not sure whether to partiation the depot or just shut it, but you can bet your life they,ll shut it cos most of the higher management dont live up here so basically the people working in the depot will be offered a job at old dolby, warrington or leicester all the others already working on the road ie engineers and sale men will continue uneffected in there jobs other than feeling *** cos some of there mates have gone, but what does it matter there only clock numbers and we dont have feelings, just glad i dont work for a company that doesnt appreciate what i do for them. Just hope that all that do leave Toyota they get something suitable.
