Discussion:
E-Steer error

Have a Hyster J1.8XNT with E steer serial number K160B09328P. the machine is giving error code 33051 which indicates an E-steer can communication fault. however the manuals I have do not cover the troubleshooting for this fault.

Can you help please. We changes the Encoder but this did not help.

Thanks

Ramzi,

The second step says to check for 12 volts at VSM CPS2 socket 35. Since you are reading 48 volts, dead short to battery. Wire 200A goes from socket 35 to Estop switch then to fuse 4. Remove fuse 4 and check voltage again. If it drops to 12 volts suspect something in the lift. If it stays the same check CPS52. Remove all pins and sockets and look for loose wires. Good Luck.

The hard to do we do right away. The impossible just takes a little longer.
Hello Fishmech,

Thanks for your reply. We did the tests as instructed and following what we have:

- Resistance between pins A and B, is 40.1 ohms.
- Voltage between pins A and C is 1.8V, B and C is 2.6 Both total about 4.4 volts.
- Voltage between socket 35 and B(-) is 48 V.
- Voltage between socket 35 and the VSM connector CPS2, socket 2 is 48 V.

No corroded terminal no shorts.

The problem is the electrics on this machine do not correspond to the diagrams we have for K160 series. This machine has electric steer i.e. there is no Orbitrol under the steering wheel rather there is an electric Encoder/Motor to do the steering. and the electrics seem different than the standard K160 series with normal hydraulic steering. Do you have electric diagrams that correspond to the electric steer model and it seems the diagnostic for this model is different.

Thank you for your help and wishiing you a merry xmas and happy new year.

Ramzi,

CAN communication fault will start with the troubleshooting port at the steer column. Pins A and B are CAN Hi and Low. With battery disconnected check resistance between pins A and B, should read about 60 ohms. Can be from 58 to 62. If you have FOC2 controllers you may read 40 ohms. Connect battery and check for voltage between pins A and C, B and C. They both should read about 2.5 volts. Can be between 1.8 to 2.6. Both should total about 4.5 volts.
Disconnect the VSM connector CPS2 and measure voltage between socket 35 and B(-).
Is voltage 12 ± 1.5 Vdc?
YES: Proceed to Step 2.
NO: Inspect circuit 200A and 200M for open or short. Inspect connector CRP52-55 for loose, damaged, or
corroded terminals.
2. Measure voltage between socket 35 and the VSM connector CPS2, socket 2.
Is voltage 12 ± 1.5 Vdc?
YES: Proceed to CAUSE C.
NO: Inspect 013-A for open or short

Cause C is check the CDF version for the truck using PC Service tool. You will need a dealer to complete. Should all checks good, replace controller. Good Luck.
