Discussion:
Stuck in reverse

Hi guys, forklift only drives in reverse, even when in neutral it still has reverse "drag" on the wheels, you can't stop it driving reverse when in neutral, put it into forward and it does nothing.

Checked direction switch, wiring, replaced forward/reverse solenoid but still wants to drive in reverse even when in neutral, I'm thinking the reverse clutch pack is locking up for some reason?

If I start the truck in neutral and release the park brake she spins like crazy straight into reverse, disconnecting the direction solenoid makes no difference, she still goes in reverse.

I've noticed when you reconnect the solenoid when in neutral although it does drive in reverse I'd say it's more of a drag rather than a drive, it's definitely noticeable when you do select reverse as it wants to drive hard like it should whereas when in neutral it's a slow drag but non the less you can't stop it, select forward and it does nothing at all, as though you've selected neutral as opposed to forward but I'm thinking the only reason it does this is because both clutch packs are now pressurized and cancelling each other out?

Any suggestions before I dive in and pull the trans?

Hi guys,

Well, over 14 more months down the line and it's happened again!!

When it came in last May I replaced the valve block assembly as the direction shuttle valve was wedged in reverse and the valve body was scored so we fitted a new one.

14 months later the exact same fault has come back only this time I can't see any issues with the valve block, shuttle valve moves freely, nothing binding up in there and springs are all good.

It looks like we'll have to dive in further, can you pull the trans and leave the engine if you take the prop shaft off or does it need to come out with the engine and then split it?

Thanks.

Hi Andrew, thanks for that, appreciate your input.

This job just gets weirder by the day!

Fork truck was backed into a corner in the warehouse, as you'd expect, threw a sling around it to pull it forward out of the way (engine running so we could lift the forks off the floor but trans was in neutral), went to tow the truck forward and the wheels were locked solid, like you had the brakes applied, then all of a sudden theres a jerk and the wheels go free and the forklift starts to drive in forward and in reverse for a good 10-15 minutes, everything fine and then for no reason the fault happens again, jammed in reverse while in neutral.

It's coming off site so will pull valve block as you suggest and let you know what we find.

Take the valve block off the top of the trans, there will be a broken spring in there more than likely.
