the controller on the side is the ECM (engine control module)
you can bring stored codes up on the check engine light but this may be too advanced for you based on your post (no offense)

this is one that you might want training for, (or pay someone who is both properly trained and has the laptop program and cables, and knows how to read it) since your problem may be any of the (important to prevent damage) sensors that connect to the ECM, and the ECM is shutting down the motor to prevent further damage, rather than run on "defaults" (the Accel pot being stuck wide open or the throttle body sending a bad signal are a couple that come to mind)
