Komatsu FG25ST11:
No Reverse

Hi guys,

I have a kamatsu FG25ST11. The lift worked fine until I loaned it to a friend. When returned, neutral is forward, and reverse is neutral, there is no reverse.

Linkage is fine, levels are fine, filter is fine. I removed the valve body on top. It is very simple and everything seems in order. Where should I go from here? I don't have the money for shop repair so please reply with things I can check here at my shop. I am perfectly capable of repairing myself I just have limited experience troubleshooting automatic transmissions. I have lived my life with manuals.

Thanks guys,
Eric

Additional info:

The engine sounds loaded all the time, even in reverse.

To sum it up:

Forward = loaded engine, forward movement
neutral = loaded engine, forward movement
reverse = loaded engine, no movement

Thanks again,
Eric

Thanks, thats exactly what it is. I split the lift and took out the tranny this morning and the forward clutch was locked. I knocked it once with a hammer lightly and it released. The clutch disks are VERY worn. Possibly the person that borrowed it abused it a bit ( revving and throwing it in forward, etc)

Is it possible that the combination of worn disks and possible abuse could have caused the "piston" to overtravel and stick? I only say that because the forward disk stack is about 1/2 inch shorter that the reverse. Basically all the fiber is gone from every disk.

All other components seem perfectly fine.

On to the fix... Does anyone know where I can find a parts diagram so I can get part numbers and start shopping? Are these disks specific to this trans. or would this disk be found in other trans?

I have looked alot already, but without a part number its difficult to get anywhere.

Thanks,
Eric

Yikes, I hate to be the one to tell you but it sure sounds like the forward clutch in the trans is broken and seized. That would cause all those symptoms. The quickest way to confirm that would be drain the transmission fluid out and start it, if it still wants to go forward while in neutral, bad news.
