Komatsu FG15-14 SERIAL # 124801:
4P Komatsu Engine Noise

Just acquired this truck and the engine has a clicking noise when accelerated. The noise seems to be in/around the water pump area. At idle the engine runs very smooth but when accelerator is depressed significantly a (clicking) is very audible. I tightened the fan bolts, loosened the alternator, removed the belt and restarted momentarily and noise was still present seemingly eliminating these three items. Engine oil is at proper level and previous owner indicated this noise was present when he purchased the unit which he ignored. It is not in my nature to leave something this significant without attempting to correct the problem. Since I'm not familiar with Komatsu engines I can't believe this is acceptable. Also would like to obtain shop/parts manual should one be available for this lift which I believe to be SM028.

I am also looking for the transmission manual. I have a 3fg14 forklift that needs a full service and Toyota said that it's too old and they don't have any.

Does anyone have one by chance?

yes, apparently desperate times create desperate measures
i'm sure they have manuals or access to the information on their trucks, they are just not going to give it out to anyone other than their dealers or service personnel.

I tried to contact several dealers and Komatsu as well as Toyota and no one seemed to have the specs or manual.

I find it hard to believe that none of them had anything for it?

yes it sounds as if your going to have to check out the hydraulic pump and front of engine in timing area so thats going to be a rather difficult job. As for the manual the dealer is probably the only place you will find one unless you luck across someone that has one and is willing to lend it to you.

good luck

Does anyone know where I can find/buy a copy of the service/shop manual for the Toyota 4p engine?

I need to rebuild the engine and need torque specs.

Cheers!

Hello John Player, since we last communicated I have replaced the four seals on the drive axles; bead blasted, painted and installed all new components for brakes and now am concentrating on the noise located in the fan, alternator, and water pump area. Also I have been diligently searching for a repair manual for the 4P Toyota engine. The serial number 01428820 is stamped on the block right under the cylinder assuming to be # 4. I am proceeding with the instructions originally forwarded and so far found nothing significant, at east to me anyway. As previously stated my background is engineering not mechanics and with technical manuals I can fly but without one I seem to be hamstrung. It looks to me as if I am going to remove the counterweight, radiator and fan to get to the pump. I wish to restore the unit to as pristine a condition as possible while having it apart. Knowing what to accomplish is one thing but following a troubleshooting section in a repair manual is quite another. If you should know where I can PURCHASE such a manual I would appreciate the info. The shop and parts manual from a Komatsu dealer was quite expensive but cover almost every lift they make.

I hope this is not to verbose!

Once again, JP, thanks. This should take a while. Will get back to the forum once completed with any results found and fixed. Since I do not have a shop manual I will play by ear. Your assumption of attempting to eliminate the water pump, alternator and fan is correct as this was my first inclination. Removed the fan belt and ran for only a short time. With clicking still audible I determined these three items may not be the source of the noise. I am totally flying in the dark but with techs such as yourself I will accomplish the task.

yup, from the looks of it you have a Toyota 4P-PNE5 engine
It is a 1493cc OHV engine

Now from what you described of the things you have already done to help eliminate what the noise "could be" I'm assuming by taking off the belt you eliminated the alternator and also the water pump? And still had this clicking noise coming from the "front" of the engine? (radiator side of engine)??
If this is the case you want to check some things.....

1) check the distributor in the cap area, even pull it out of the block and check the gear, look for any signs of anything broken or worn.
2) check the valves, yes pull the valve cover and check the valve clearances and make sure all is well there, no broken springs or loose valve adjustments.
3) check the fan drive, if part of the water pump?, then double check the bearing on the pump.

from the looks of the illustrations i can make out in the manual there are gears inside the front cover, if you donot find anything from what i mentioned above then you can pull the cover and inspect the gears and make sure none of them are out of order, damaged or chipped teeth , anything as such.

Generally a clicking noise can be associated with valves out of adjustment or maybe even spark plug wires breaking down and arcing against the head somewhere, even inside the sparkplug area. (This is another thought to check on)
I would do the easy things first, then go from there. :o)

Some points of interest that may come in handy
Valve clearance:
Intake:0.20
Exhaust:0.36

Points Gap:
0.4 - 0.5mm
Spark Plug Gap:
0.7 - 0.8mm
Cam Closing Angle (I'm assuming this is Dwell)
50 - 54deg

They do not list a single timing degree , they show timings for intake and exhaust valves on opening and closing and also talk about an octane degree setting. I wont go into that at this point because its more info that will just confuse you for the moment. Just try the things i mentioned and then we can go from there.

Hello John Player,

Yes all the info I have on the truck, is a 4 cylinder engine which has 4P cast in the block closest to the clutch housing on driver's side. Above this is 0148820 stamped into engine on a smooth surface possibly a serial number. Under this and slightly to the left is cast 1493 cc which could be indicative of displacement. The oil cap has Komatsu with Japanese writing on the perimeter. Best I can tell the engine is painted blue. Is this a Toyota?
