There is a chain that drives the hydraulic pump on the front of the motor, inside the front cover. Do you notice any difference in the sound if you tilt back all the way and put a load on the pump and chain? If the chain is worn and stretched enough it will make noise and actually jump on the sprocket and make a knocking noise under load. Counterweight, radiator, and front cover must come off to get at it.
