The toll for some container ships traversing the Suez Canal will increase by 15% from January 15 next year, the Suez Canal Authority has announced.

The 15% increase will also apply to tankers carrying petroleum products, liquefied petroleum, liquefied gas or chemicals, as well as car ferries and cruise ships.

The fees for dry bulk cargo and general cargo, as well as roll-on-roll-off vessels will increase by 5% in January.

However, the canal authority says container ships coming from North-Western European ports and headed to Far Eastern ports will be exempt from the January increase.

Brazil's first fully electric general cargo and container terminal has cleared another hurdle as it pursues its plan to be operational in 2026.

APM Terminals Suape, which will have the capacity to handle 400,000 TEUs, received approval from Brazil’s National Waterway Transport Agency to change its cargo profile, enabling the terminal to operate containerised cargo and expand the area to be used by the terminal.

“APM Terminals Suape will be the first 100% electrified terminal in Latin America with a BRL1.6 billion (USD320 million) investment in this first implementation phase,” says APM Terminals Suape managing director Aristides Junior.

Construction is expected to begin in 2024, with operations expected to start in the second quarter of 2026.

Hong Kong Stock Exchange-listed ESR says the Higashi Ogishima Distribution Centre 2 will have 306,000 sqm of gross floor area across eight storeys.

The company says the USD2.5 billion warehouse will be one of the largest warehouses in Japan.

Construction of Higashi Ogishima Centre 2 is expected to begin in 2025. The six hectare site of the centre is within the Tokyo metropolitan area, 10 km to Haneda Airport, with good access to the port, central Tokyo, Yokohama and Kawasaki.
