Cold chain logistics a hot topic
Shanghai, China

Intermodal Asia 2015, to be held from 24-26 March in Shanghai, will feature the latest news and information on the cold store chain and reefer containers.
Expo organisers say the world's growing appetite for food and drink - and many other temperature-sensitive products - has led it to spotlight cold chain logistics at the upcoming show. Global growth aside, the industry is also concerned over the use of greenhouse gas refrigerants, an issue that will be covered at the expo.
Exhibitors displaying products and services for the cold chain industry include MCI (Star Cool), CIMC, Singamas, CXIC, Daikin and Emerson Climate Technology.
Intermodal Asia is organised by Informa Exhibitions and the China Container Industry Association, and covers all areas of container transport and logistics across road, rail and sea. Informa Exhibitions also organises Intermodal Europe, the exhibition and conference for companies associated with the container and intermodal industries, now in its 40th year.

Seminars attract IPAF instructors
Crooklands, United Kingdom

Over 720 instructors and training centre staff attended the IPAF (International Powered Access Federation) professional development seminars (PDS) covering 25 countries and eight languages in the last few months.
The seminars are an annual event for IPAF-certified instructors and ensure that they remain up to date with legislation and training. Through attending the event, instructors gain Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points, necessary to maintain their IPAF instructor status. According to IPAF, this commitment to continuous learning is one of the unique features of the IPAF training program.
"The 2015 PDS was one of the best ever," says IPAF instructor Roberto Catana from Setif in Italy. "It was precise, timely, well-planned, dynamic, capturing technical excellence, legislation and teaching. The PDS provided answers to questions, and gave clarity to uncertainties. It was done with the heart and goodwill of all those who work to keep this industry safe."

Trials for lithium-ion forklift batteries
Mississauga, ON, Canada

Electrovaya Inc will begin field trials of lithium-ion forklift batteries at a Toronto, Ontario distribution centre of Mondel?z Canada Inc during the first quarter. Neither terms nor quantities were disclosed for the forklift-related project.
The packs with intelligent battery management systems can reduce emissions and power requirements by up to 35% versus lead-acid batteries, says Electrovaya. The firm also believes its technology is superior to hydrogen-powered fuel cells now beginning to penetrate the market for forklift applications.
Much of Electrovaya's previous business involves lithium-ion SuperPolymer-brand batteries for clean transportation, smart grid and healthcare applications. In late January, Electrovaya says it delivered a CAD700,000 (USD549,570) stationary energy storage system for installation at the Glencore plc's Raglan mine in Nord-du-Québec in the province of Québec.

GPA adds to ERTG fleet
Savannah, GA, United States

The Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) is adding to its fleet of all-electric rubber-tyre gantry (ERTG) cranes at the deep-water port of Savannah's Garden City terminal.
The authority operates 116 RTGs now and is in the process of sequentially adding 20 and then 10 more units by 2016 en route to an expectation of having 169 cranes by 2024, according to the GPA communications office. A busbar system will power each new crane, which will be equipped with an active load control and remote monitoring systems.
GPA says the port of Savannah handled 8% of the US containerised cargo volume and 10.9% of all US containerised exports during 2013.
GPA placed the latest ERTG order for 10 cranes with its longtime partner, the container-handling business of publicly traded Konecranes Plc of Hyvinkää, Finland.).
