UniCarriers Corp is transitioning its engine emission control branding from Nissan to Global Components Technologies Corp (GCT). GCT is a wholly owned subsidiary of operating company UniCarriers, itself a 100% subsidiary of Tokyo-based UniCarriers Holdings Corp.
GCT was established in 2013 and is responsible for the engine certifications with the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the California Air Resources Board (CARB). "Therefore, these engines have the GCT emission control label," says Steve Cianci, vice president of sales and marketing for the Marengo-based UniCarriers Americas Corp business unit.
No changes have occurred in the engineering or making of the K12, K25 and other engines for UniCarriers/Nissan/TCM/Barrett forklifts or related engine production under contract for other forklift original equipment manufacturers. "The only changes are to the emission certificate holder and the emission control label," he notes.
"The majority of engines are produced at the Nissan Kohki (Co Ltd) factory in (Samukawa) Japan under contract manufacturing for GCT," Cianci says. "There is limited production in Marengo for certain engine fuel types."
UD Trucks Corp of Ageo, Japan, formerly the Nissan Diesel Motor Co Ltd, continues to manufacture the QD32 and TD42 diesel engines for forklift applications. Those engines come under the UD Trucks emission control label for EPA/CARB certification.
Also, UD Trucks manufactures the new ZD30 diesel engine. "GCT owns the (ZD30) design and is responsible for EPA/CARB certification," Cianci says. "Therefore, the ZD30 has the GCT emission control label."
UniCarriers Holdings was established in 2011. Nissan Forklift Co Ltd and TCM Corp became UniCarriers Corp subsidiaries in 2012. Operations were integrated in 2013.
