Caterpillar Inc has announced CEO of 45 years, D. James Umpleby, is stepping down from his role and will be replaced by current chief operating officer Joseph E. Creed from May 1.

Umpleby will step into the role of executive chairman of the board.

Creed started with Caterpillar in 1997 and has had a number of senior positions with the company including CFO for Caterpillar’s Energy & Transportation and VP Oil & Gas.

"I'm proud to work alongside our talented Caterpillar employees and dealers as we continue to support customers across our diverse businesses, from disaster recovery and building the world's infrastructure to delivering critical minerals and reliable energy,” Creed states.

Caterpillar director Debra L. Reed-Klages said the company was deeply grateful for the work of Umpleby.

“His impact on our customers, dealers, shareholders and employees will continue for years to come," Reed-Klages continues. "Joe's selection as CEO is the result of a multi-year succession planning process by the Board of Directors.

“He is a proven leader with significant experience in Caterpillar's global businesses. We are confident Joe will position Caterpillar for continued future success.”
