Caterpillar Inc has announced CEO of 45 years, D. James Umpleby, is stepping down from his role and will be replaced by current chief operating officer Joseph E. Creed from May 1.
Umpleby will step into the role of executive chairman of the board.
Creed started with Caterpillar in 1997 and has had a number of senior positions with the company including CFO for Caterpillar’s Energy & Transportation and VP Oil & Gas.
"I'm proud to work alongside our talented Caterpillar employees and dealers as we continue to support customers across our diverse businesses, from disaster recovery and building the world's infrastructure to delivering critical minerals and reliable energy,” Creed states.
Caterpillar director Debra L. Reed-Klages said the company was deeply grateful for the work of Umpleby.
“His impact on our customers, dealers, shareholders and employees will continue for years to come," Reed-Klages continues. "Joe's selection as CEO is the result of a multi-year succession planning process by the Board of Directors.
“He is a proven leader with significant experience in Caterpillar's global businesses. We are confident Joe will position Caterpillar for continued future success.”

Carole Bachmann will take up the role of secretary general of the European Rental Association (ERA) at the start of July with incumbent secretary general Michel Petitjean stepping down at the end of June.
Petitjean has been secretary general of the ERA since it was established in 2006.
"Michel has been instrumental in building the European Rental Association into the globally recognised organisation it is today,” the ERA states. “His vision, relentless work, and passion for the rental industry have left a legacy that will inspire future generations.
“Carole has been with ERA since 2013, bringing with her an impressive background in the rental sector, including her experience with Loxam and Wynne Systems. Over the years, she has worked closely with Michel and demonstrated unwavering commitment and leadership.”

Jean Lavigueur has been named by Canadian lithium-ion energy solutions provider UgoWork to the position of chairman of the Board of Directors.
The company says the addition of Lavigueur to its staff is part of its “aggressive growth trajectory”.
Lavigueur brings more than 25 years’ experience in senior management positions, including 19 as CFO with Cove where he shaped the financial backbone of the billion-dollar technology company.
“UgoWork stands out for how it combines industrial depth with the agility of a young tech company,” Lavigueur says of his new role.
“It’s a combination that creates real opportunity, and I look forward to contributing to this next stage with a focus on structure and perspective.”
