Process automation is one of the challenges raised last November by Louis Gallois in his report "Pact for the competitiveness of French industry".

Leader in automated guided vehicles (AGV), BA Systèmes is a jewel of the intra-logistics industry and of the French mobile robotic sector. Based at Rennes in Brittany, the company " develops global solutions in materials handling and automated storage together with offering associated services for manufacturing and distribution across Europe" says Laurent Depont, Commercial Director.

The L'Oréal experience
In factories, distribution centres and warehouses, BA Systèmes is involved across the whole range of links in the supply chain and at all stages of the transformation of goods from raw materials through to semi-finished and finished products.

Deployments undertaken by the L'Oréal group illustrate the expertise gained over 30 years in intralogistics and mobile robotics. At its Faprogi subsidiary, 20 reachtruck

AGV's automate all stock movements: from the supply of raw material from the production workshops to the release of finished product at the end of the chain through to the handling in storage and transportation zones.

Handling 250 boxes and pallets per hour, these high rates deliver a near instantaneous response to all stages of the process. For this AGV application, BA Systèmes developed very precise recognition and load positioning functions.

On-board intelligence
In the provision of logistics services, automating dispatches allows operators to concentrate on the job of picking and loading trucks. "For example, with the help of an AGV reachtruck, the movements are secure and can be tracked. Thanks to software developments which interface with all the WMS currently in the market, it is possible to integrate the constraints of shipment. The AGV will handle the load taking into account predefined rules."

At Dutch manufacturer Friesland Campina, the 10 AGV designed by BA Systèmes optimise stocks and are even involved in the actual process of ripening of the cheese. Following a tightly defined planning process, the trucks automatically and precisely position the boxes containing hundreds of cheeses in ventilated storage units.

Having achieved the cycle of transformation, the cheeses are taken by the AGV to the preparation zones. Unique, this made to measure application for Friesland Campina is competing in the Innovation Award at Intralogistics 2013.
