Kalmar has completed a project to supply the onboard navigation application for four automated guided vehicles (AGVs) to port operator PSA Singapore. The initiative is part of PSA's investment in automation technologies to enhance its status as the world's largest trans-shipment hub.
The project includes the design of the AGVs' onboard navigation system, the navigation infrastructure and the deployment of Kalmar SmartFleet remote diagnostic tools. The installation and integration to vehicle systems started in the northern autumn of 2013, and the navigation application was fully integrated with PSA Singapore's in-house systems by the end of 2014.
Timo Alho, director of terminal automation for Kalmar, says that terminal operators are increasingly using automated solutions to boost port productivity and reduce overheads. "We are delighted that our software was selected for this important project. The successful integration of Kalmar's navigation technologies to third-party equipment proves that our automation solutions are indeed compatible with any equipment brand. This project was completed on time and on budget."
The software, originally developed by Kalmar for its AutoShuttle automated shuttle carrier, automatically controls the AGVs, guiding the vehicles along their given routes and accurately measuring their positions using transponder navigation.
The Kalmar SmartFleet diagnostics tools provide a remote view of the operation of the equipment, as well as storage and call-up of essential AGV alarms and machine signals for operator analysis.
Kalmar is part of Cargotec. Cargotec's sales totalled EUR3.4 billion (USD3.9 billion) in 2014 and it employs approximately 11,000 people.
PSA, formerly known as Port of Singapore Authority, has been voted the Best Container Terminal (Asia) for the 25th time at the 2014 Asian Freight & Supply Chain Awards and received the Port Operator Award at the Lloyd's List Asia Awards for the 13th time in 2014.
