Discussion:
WONT START UNLESS I PRIME IT DIESEL 4 CYL.

I HAVE A MID 80TEES TOYOTA 2FD-30 WITH A 4CYL DIESEL ENGINE!.IM HAVING STARTING PROBS WITH IT.THE FORK LIFT WILL NOT START WITH THE GLOW PLUGS OR EITHER!.THE ONLY WAY I CAN GET IT TO START IS IF I PUT DIESEL IN THE INTAKE THEN IT TAKES A BIT BUT WILL FIRE UP AND RUN GOOD.I CAN SHUT IT OFF AND TRY TO START A MIN LATER AND IT WILL NOT START UNLESS I PRIME INTAKE AGAIN..I WAS THINKING I HAD BAD RINGS ON ONE OR 2 CYL,BUT THE MACHINE RUNS GREAT WHEN IT DOES START!.HAS 5700 HRS ON IT!.ALSO AFTER I PRIME IT AND IT DOES START SEEMS TO SMOKE LIKE A TAR PIT TILL IT WARMS UP.THEN THE MACHINE RUNS AND WORKS GREAT TILL I SHUT IT DOWN...

TO CHECK COMPRESSION IS IT JUST REMOVING THE INJECTORS AND TESTING FOR COMPRESSION AS I WOULD ON A GASOLINE ENGINE?...

PLEASE LMK IF ANYONE OUT THERE MAY WORK ON THESE!...

THANKS..

I have a lift like that is it a 2j engine and works on a 24 volt system ? if so check if the heater plugs are wired right i had issues starting mine until i found out the wires were not connected, after connecting the wires i just press the switch for a few secs then it starts at the first try the smoking could be caused by a bad air filter or a injector issue get them re-calibrated, you can start the engine and loosen the injector lines one at a time if you loosen one and notice no loss of power from engine u have a bad injector.

It's almost like an gas engine except you have much higher presures upwards 360psi. You will need a special insert. You may find one that will fit the glow plug if not then you will need the one for the injector. It not starting on either makes me think your having problems getting air into the chambers for cumbustion till you prime it whick in filling the void till it starts and can produce sufficnet air for it's self. Thats something to look at.
