Discussion:
Truck will not crank over

Hello,
I was wondering if someone could point me in the right direction. Customer called me in for a no start. Truck will not crank over. I first checked the basics. Battery and connections were good. All fuses good. Ignition switch seems ok. I noticed there's a relay right beside the starter. There's a yellow wire with a white chaser that I assume should receive voltage when the key is turned on but nothing. If I run a wire from there to battery positive the starter engages. I was reading that these trucks may of been equipped with a delay to protect the starter from getting damaged. Also, I noticed in the column that the wires coming off the keyswitch go to a printed circuit board and from there I'm not sure how they exit. Unfortunately, I don't have a wiring schematic which makes it a challenge.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Jay

Problem resolved. The truck is a messy nightmare in regards to butchered wiring and cleanliness. I started tracing all harness's coming from the starter and relays. I ended up finding two broken ground wires under the control valve. Plus I had to repair a couple other wires that weren't in good shape. I discovered the ground wires accidentally while performing a wiggle test. The relay started clicking and just followed every path until I found them.
Thanks for your help.

Has it got a monotrol pedal or column shift?? If monotrol check the handbrake switch is working as the truck will not start if the handbrake switch is faulty. If column change check the micro switches as a faulty switch (very common fault on the XM) will give the same problem as it will think the truck is in gear

Some starters use a starter relay, you might need a new relay.

Since you confirmed that the starter works when apply a separate positive voltage, I think that you need a new ignition switch.
