Clark C500Y60:
C500Y60 Fuel issue

We picked up this lift about 6 months ago, had a new model J regulator and CA100 mixer I put on, it would start and idle okay, but it smelled very rich but needed choked to run anything over idle, if you didn't choke it and gave it throttle it would just fall on its face and die. Even running choked the engine didn't have much power, it is a f245 continental. since then it has new LP hoses and I installed another mixer and a newer cobra regulator/vaporizer. as well as a new lock off valve and new propane tank. Still smells rich but needs choked to run anything over idle, even at idle it helps to have the intake almost completely covered. I did set the valves, checked compression, all the holes were 110-135. valves all moving. Any help would be appreciated.

Where do vacuum readings need to be taken from? the test port on the mixer?

I put the spark testors on it, nice crisp blue spark throughout all speeds, even when the engine is coughing and sputtering.
the only thing I haven't changed is the diaphragm and spring in the mixer. I have seen other diaphragms but never another spring? I did put the red spring in the regulator.
This thing has me confused.

Yes the tank is liquid withdrawl, we get our propane at the local MFA, everyone else gets it there too. i have used a different tank off of another lift and it acted the same. ill check out the ignition etc and report back. it will be a little bit.

Same question that bbforks asked, what type of LP tank you have? Is it a liquid withdrawal type?

Sounds like this is going to require getting back to the basics. You're going to have to take vacuum readings thru the rpm range & install the spark testers to test the ignition.

Where are you sourcing your propane? What type of lp tank are you using? What type of shut off solenoid does your system have?

If you've got a model J impco converter with the correct spring & a new electronic distributor, then it's time to look outside the box. Where did you source the dist cap, rotor, wires & spark plugs. I personally have had no luck with tvh parts in the tune up/electronic realm.

Are you sure the ignition coil is receiving a full 12 volts thru the entire rpm range? All these suggestions are all off the wall but they do rear their head once in a blue moon

Customers love technology- until they have to pay to fix it!
I did not get the spark testors for it, I did order a new electronic ignition setup for it and put it on. You all make it sound like thats what needs to be on there, so i have it on there and running with it.

Still does the same thing. Get the spark testors or does the electronic ignition rule that out?

I would, u went back to points. I'd also get a known good non internal resistor coil. Flame thrower from pertronix is the best imo.

I still have the resistor, not wired in though, want me to wire it back in when i get the spark testors on it?
Thank you

get some cheap spark testers. throw them on all 6 and watch as you get to mid-high throttle.
it should have still run with the ballast resistor wired in even with an internal resistor coil.
jump battery positive right to coil.

I did end up getting the PN yesterday, ordered it and it was here this morning. Put it in a minute ago, the exhaust is a little better but it still acts the same at mid-high throttle, coughs and sputters until you restrict the intake some. Any other ideas? Was hoping that would fix it.

The part number for just the orange spring is S2-38 and blue spring is S2-35

Check TVH parts. That is where we get ours.

Hey Brewski,
I have been looking around for the orange spring like you said. Cant find one. Probably have to get a whole regulator?
