Discussion:
LP smell while running

I have a yale with a mazda engine in it. I have never messed with the spectrum fuel system in the past. I have no idea how much fuel pressure I am suposed to have coming out of the regulator to the throttle body assembly. Is it the same as the old Impco systems. I dont hear nor see LP leaking from the fuel system but smell it as soon as you turn the lift on. When i remove the vapor hose from the throttle body it has pressure behind it and i do not know if this is correct.

I just had a service call on one of these today and found that the lockoff was not competely shuting off the fuel. You could smell propane after it was parked for about 5 minutes and then when you tried to restart it, it cranked much longer than usual and when it started it ran rough for a couple seconds until it "cleared it's throat" from being flooded.

You should have 2-4 psi while cranking. If its more than 5 psi, replace EPR. If not, check or replace lock-off.

a mixture of dawn dishwashing liquid and water in a spray bottle works perfect for leak testing an LP system ;o)

of course if u got money to burn and wanna go hi tech you can always get a electronic sniffer

I agree with mrfixit. Do the soapy water test around the lock off and around the ports where the hoses come off the EPR to the mixer. Chances are good that you may need to replace an o-ring or tighten a hose clamp.

You may just have a leak somewhere. I would take a spray bottle of water and a little soap and check for leaks where the lock off mounts on the regulator and the regulator itself with the motor running.

This truck has an Impco fuel system with an EPR (electronic pressure regulator). It has no injectors. My guess is the lock off valve is stuck in the open position causing raw fuel to dump into the epr and then out to the mixer. You can take the lock off apart and clean the valve. (I find gasoline works well). If you do that and it still leaks through the EPR, then I'd replace the lock off and EPR.

These trucks are know to have injector problems. I would start there.

I need the serial number in order to see which fuel system u have. VX trucks come with different LP fuel systems depending on the year of build.
