perkins engine quits running

Ing.Rand vr-90c zoom boom with I believe is a perkins 1004-4t diesel. For the past while the engine has always had white smoke at long idle periods. Now the engine will run at high RPM for about 3-5 minutes, then just die.It is hard starting after that.Sometimes the fuel filter is half empty.Sometimes will start after playing with the fuel system,or by cranking and putting the throttle wide open...any suggestions?

Hello, Check the simple things first. Diesels hate fuel contamination. Change fuel filter - bleed system properly - check to see there is no water - dirt - garbage floating in the fuel tank. Start there hope it helps
