Ring Gear Failure on H40/50D VW Diesel Engines

Anyone having ring gear failure on the VW diesel engine? Engine speed sensor reads ring gear speed and when teeth are missing shuts down the unit.

RING GEAR FAILURE iIE-TEETH MISSING WILL THROW THE ENGINE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM INTO DEFAULT MODE AND NOT ALLOW FOR NORMAL FUNCTION. THE HYDROSTATC DRIVE WILL HAVE TO BE PULLED BACK AND ENGINE BUCKED UP TO REMOVE SUPPORTS AND RING GEAR. COMMONLY WHEN RING GEAR HAS ISSUES YOU WILL ALSO FIND THAT THE MOUNTING DRIVE BETWEEN ENGINE AND HYDROSTATIC DRIVE IS ALSO COMPROMISED.

Hi Kevin
No its not just you as usual with some Linde jobs you need extra joints in your arms, not to bad on the 392 without turbo.
Have you replaced a turbo yet? That will test your flexabilty :-)

Good old Linde, just like them to charge an arm and a leg to put something right that was a common problem in the first place!!

On the 39x trucks we found the starters seem to be a problem there are two types of pinion one with 10 teeth one with 11
the ten toothed ones are u/s. Linde now supply a modified starter and mounting plate but it costs an arm and a leg

This does seem to be a problem on the 39x trucks but not too bad on the 2t and 2.5 t trucks, you are correct the ring gear is very narrow and often the speed sensor cuts the truck out before the starting becomes a problem.
Its not a bad job to do at least you don't have to take the engine out.
It is also recommended that the starter motor is changed incase it is sticking, also noticed when ring gear is chewed the pinion on the starter is fine.

We have done quite a few and they have been on different sites, so I would rule out operator error, but they have all been on sites with a high number on stop and starts in the day, and have all been 2500kg diesel 39x trucks with VW engine.

New York, New York its a heluva town..you know that The Bronx is up..and I'm Brooklyn down
My company has had almost two dozen failures on the ring gears. We can not get Linde to admit that there is a problem. How many failures have you had?

Yes I have had this problem a few times.
It is due to a stupidly narrow ring gear.
