Discussion:
Steering problems

I have a Hyster E60XL that is having a steering issue. We are new to the shop and inherited the truck. It has worked fine for about three weeks and today it won't steer correctly. You have to turn the steering wheel more than you used to, to get it to turn. I am new to these machines so not sure where to start or any ideas of what may be the problem. Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks, Mark

yep i figured it was either that or what edward said about the brushes being worn out/burned up.

very good... just make sure you put the same type fuse back in it... anything other than the slow blow wont last very long. :o)

ok then

check these things

1 - the 40A power steering fuse located in the back panel area on the fuse board, it is a slow blow fuse, make sure it's not blown.

2- check for a small contactor near where the fuse block is in the rear panel, may have burnt up contacts in it also check for power to it.

3- then as edward said, check the brushes in the power steering motor, you can remove the small covers covering the brush area and check the brushes.

After this it gets more complicated by checking the encoder in the steering column and its circuit. That encoder is connected to a steering activator card that gets signals from the directional control, the contactor in the rear, key switch input and a pressure switch from the motor pump sensor switch. You'll probably need a manual to get the diagrams and voltage check points and specs to do this part.

Can you hear the steer motor running?

It takes several turns before the wheels move and they will not move while still. It also takes some force even when moving to steer it.

I am betting his power steering pump motor brushes are worn out causing the pump to stop, then requiring more of the "arm-strong power" steering.

"it's not rocket surgery"
so are you saying that you have to turn the steering wheel alot to get the steer wheels to move? Do they turn when sitting still? or does the truck have to be moving?

it sounds to me like either a bad orbitrol valve in the steering column or possibly a faulty steer cylinder.

Possibly could be a priority valve issue.

taking pressure readings would be your first priority

Fact of the week
The two internal cavities in our nose called nostrils function as separate organs. Each nostril has its own set of turbinates and olfactory receptors. The two independent organs work together through a mechanism called the nasal cycle, where one nostril is dominant for air intake while the other rests and is better at detecting scents.
