Sounds like someone has wired in a generic key switch instead of replacing with OEM or OEM style as it should have either a 3 or 4 terminal plug in style switch. I am guessing based on you saying that it had a Hyster key that it is generic and the wires either have terminals that either push on or you put the wires under a screw to attach them.
