Discussion:
Removed Starter Oil/Fluid Leak

Hi,
I have what I believe is a C500 lift. I'm not exactly sure, the serial number on the frame is: Y355 273 2543. I think the machine is mid 70's. Has a Waukeshaw 155 4 cyl. engine and trans has lo/hi. From my research it has a "wet" bell housing. The starter was starting to drag so we removed it and I'd say about a pint or so of oil, or trans fluid leaked out. I was wondering if the amount of oil is normal or is there perhaps an internal seal leak, or breather that's plugged, etc., that should be addressed?

My starter lasted over 20 years until it took a dump. That was just a regular starter. Now I'm learning a lot about these starters. There's several seals that need to be in place for wet applications.

I've had that same problem with the old Clark's,but mine normally leaks thu the starter body. I've bought 3 different starters and they all leak through the starter case.

Scott,

Thank you for taking the time to respond, especially on a holiday. That does help. I took it apart today and there was no seals. That surprised me because I've had this lift for almost 30 years and never had any starter problems. So, I'm going to rebuild it, with seals that are already ordered.

I haven't worked on that truck for a long time but what l remember is that the starter is wet when getting it rebuilt there is a seal that stops the oil from entering the starter armature l believe what you are seeing is normal oil from Bell housing hope this helps
