Discussion:
Replacing Mast Seals

My forklift has twin masts and the left seal at the top is leaking whenever I use the forklift. Serial # 2MC950. The questions I have are:
Should I replace both left and right mast seals at one time or just the bad left one?
I was told this is a 2-3 hour repair but everyone in my area are too busy or not interested in doing this job. Can a backyard mechanic like me replace these myself? Are there any special tools need to do this. I can get the seal kits from my local CAT dealer.
It looks easy enough to unbolt the top crossmember, block it, and undo the roller chains. When I bolt everything back do these need to be torqued to a certain amount?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, James(Maui, Hawaii) (808)572-4698

Is there truly a shortage of forklift mechanics in Hawaii? I should get on the next plane! Seriously though, I wouldn't reccomend trying this repair yourself if you don't have experience with this type of work for safety reasons, but the technical aspect of replacing the seals on a lift cylinder is usually not that challenging. Also I would recommend replacing the seals on both cylinders since its not much more work than doing just the leaky one. Changing the hydraulic oil & filter whenyour done would be a good idea too.

Did you have trouble getting the seals over threaded parts of the shaft? If so, how did you do it without damaging the seal?
Thanks,
Paul

Thanks,

Fact of the week
In March 2002, identical twins in Finland died on the same day in similar accidents within hours of each other. A 70-year-old man was killed by a truck while cycling; hours later, his twin brother was killed by a truck on the same road, about a mile away, before the family had been informed of the first accident.
