Discussion:
pedal position sensor

I have a Komatsu FG25T-14, serial #587119A, LP lift. Had a Springer tech out to look at it a couple months ago, and he said my pedal position sensor was going bad. He made some adjustments and said maybe that will get you through ill have one sent to you and you can just put it on it is no problem. So put it on today, and now the lift will not rev up at all without coding out. Reset the code, and try again when it will rev up for longer than a few seconds it will rev up then down then up then down. Read in a different question about learning the system by turning on key for 5 seconds then off for 10 then back on for 5 and back off for 10. Made no change in how the lift was acting. Unhooked battery for and hr, made no change. Any advice on something else to check or maybe adjust to get this lift running without having to get a tech back out. Might I add that 2 have been and lift still doesn't run correctly. Thanks for you guys time.

Thanks for the reply Jeff, I am back with another one from this era, and now left wondering about the laptop software (and related cables), availability for non Komatsu (independent) service techs, can you provide any more information? the local dealer's employees seem to think it is only available to them.

On Komatsu Forklifts with K21 or K25 engines older than 2007, unfortunately there are only two ways to get the codes out. The pedal dance or the Hitachi Handset. 2007 & newer the EPA mandated OBDC II Code in the ECM software so you can pulll codes with a generic OBDC II Code Reader. Komatsu also offers laptop or Tablet based software to pull codes.

yep, thanks, but the ones before 2007 was what I was asking about, and now that I know they should be flashing a code I can keep looking... Thanks.
I usually can do the dance in 3 or 4 tries...

On the accelerator sensor there's a plastic piece that hooks to the arm which rides in the fork of the pedal if that piece is ever worn it will throw a code you can rotate that plastic piece with a pair of pliers 180 degrees and then do the 10-2-10 and it will recalibrate

Edward if you google " Nissan clearing codes with foot pedal method" a step by step process will be explained. When the engine light starts blinking it is blinking the P code the Google that and it will lead you in the rite direction. I have found out if you use a stopwatch you can get it on one of the first 5 tries but if you don't you could do it 50 times and still not get it.

I would sure like to know if there are other ways to "get the codes" in a 2004 to 2007 Komatsu product with a k21-k25 engine, than with the "diagnostic reader".

That was where I was going with my description of "centering" the APPS mounting.
My term of centering is not the best way of adjusting or learning the APPS idle air position, but is usually the best place to start.
As others on here have said, sometimes it takes repeated attempts to get the ECM through its learning process, and other times it's a breeze.

Finally got a tech out with a diagnostic scanner yesterday. Turns out the throttle linkage was set to far out and was causing the lift to go below voltage and fault into creep mode. He said you probably could have solved this months ago had the other techs brought what they should have had. Got to love that.

No, none of the techs have connected a diagnostic tool to the lift. I was actually out of town when the second one came and said it was the pps, he told me on the phone all I would have to do is put the new one on and plug it up. Which did nothing, to fix the problem. By coding out I mean their is a red light on the dash that comes on every time, and then the lift will do nothing but idle. I can turn it off and reset it, and it will rev up maybe once then the light comes back on and it goes into idle only. I tried setting the sensor in several different places and doing the thing with the key to learn the system, still nothing changed. The one time I was able to get the lift to idle up, it would rev up then down then up then down, then it would code into idle only.

Have any of the "techs" connected a diagnostic service tool to the forklift to see if any codes are stored?
If nobody has connected a diagnostic reader to the truck I wonder how it was decided to blame the APPS?
Anyhow, if you did not try to "center" the mounting screws of the new APPS when you installed it, you may be preventing the ECM from learning the true idle position of the APPS.
You say it is "coding out". Do you mean that the amber malfunction indicator lamp lights up?
I would be interested to know what DTC code is stored, or active, and a diagnostic reader is best for that.
