Discussion:
Music on a Forklift

Hi All,

I am in a back and forth with Supervisors on the use of Bluetooth speakers on forklifts.
These are not closed cab lifts, they are all sit-down lifts , electric and propane.

Obviously I do not see the need fro operators to listen to music, only the opportunity for distracted driving. I want the employees to enjoy work, but then again this is not a trip to Zaxby's.

Have any of you experienced this same issue and if so what was the outcome?

The argument is that our assembly area is able to have Bluetooth speakers...why can't the drivers. >.<

Thanks for the feedback, Swoop.

I was able to meet with our CEO to discuss the concern and it was decided to NOT allow the use of those devices (or any) on the lifts.

To quote the conversation "Absolutely not, they are driving around death machines."

Glad upper management agreed...this time!

they aren't driving a car, they are driving several thousand pounds around and need to have their complete attention on where they are going and all the environment around them.
ANY distractions over and above the normal surrounding distractions are not a good thing.
Now there is no precedent set for this really it just never has been an option considered on most lifts. I have seen radio's installed in large yard lifts with cab's on them but for the most part a radio is just an additional cost and distraction that just isn't needed and not ever thought of as any sort of option on forklifts.
And the argument of the assembly department having a radio playing while drivers don't?
Well honestly the reason is pretty clear.
Plus, have you ever been in a place where there are multiple radio's playing different music? frankly THAT is MORE distracting.
