Discussion:
Main lift cylinder leaking

I have a problem with a forklift that is leaking from the center lift cylinder. Its is a LPG sit down truck. It has a hairline crack at the top of the cylinder cap where the seals are located. Now, i have done this repair before, you can just take out the pulley assembly and unscrew the cylinder end cap and remove it. But this seems to me one assembly. Another problem, there is no model or serial number that can be seen just a mast number. Any ideas?

truck serial number should be on the front chassis look behind where the auxillary hoses meet the front of the truck. mast serial should be on the right hand outer section about half way up. we had loads of faulty cylinders on these trucks after some wise guy left the cylinder tubes out in the rain during manufacture, then just built them up and sent them out.that was a while ago though

sounds good talk to you then

btw the serial number of the machine is stamped into the frame (most likely under the hood) on the right side of the machine (right side as if youre sitting on it)

The placard is badly worn. You cant see the model or serial number. I'm going to have to get you the mast type monday. The break down would be awesome thanks.

it wouldnt be anymore complicated than if you were just replacing the seals
the only difference is you are replacing the old gland (cap) with a new one

either way you would replace the seals in the same fashion

if you havnt repacked a cylinder before or if youre not comfortable replacing the seals without scratching the metal parts, then take it to the hydraulic place (sometimes repacking cylinders can be a little tricky, in general. this cylinder could be a piece of cake, but i dont know for this one in particular)

most cylinder seal kits only come with rubber parts and would be repacked the same way

DO NOT re-use the old seals if you do it yourself

I think i am just going to take out the entire cylinder assembly itself and take it to a repair shop to have the endcap replaced and seals repacked. What do you think? How complicated do you think this will be?

you need the "gland nut" and a packing kit
if youre gonna take it apart and buy the kit you should replace the seals on the piston itself too (remove the ram)

whats your mast number and overall lift height? (lift height is on the data plate)
from what i see, it just screws in just like other cylinders
youll need a spanner wrench
look to see if you can get a number off the cylinder itself (stamped in the metal)

your mast number should start with A753
the lift height should be either 85.5" or 97.3"
