Discussion:
jungheinrich starter

Hi all,
I have a tfg 25bk serial number 89896825 I don't know the year of manufacture. The starter nose breaks off every 3 months, the ring gear is al right, we have tried to add some more shim, how do you know how many shims to use, is they a way of measuring the gap between the pinion and ring gear.

The part number is a Jungheinrich no and is the correct one for that truck s/no. These engines are just a very poor engine in general, they blow exhaust manifold gaskets like they are going out of fashion, get them slightly hot and they blow the head gasket between 2 & 3, the bottom pulley vibration damper falls apart, they are noisy and the starter mounting is a crap idea, apart from that they r ok!!;-)

I think there may be more than 3 or 4 different brackets for these GM HEI starters, as there are at least 4 different starters for these trucks, with only slightly different lengths of starter housings. I also think that you should follow your manufacturers recommendations about adding a time delay that gives the starter a 1/2 second of running before any spark gets to the motor.
This problem has to do with how much compression these motors hold, and how hot a spark they get when the key turns off for a split second between "on" and "starter crank", which causes a spark as the coil field collapses, that ignites what ever fuel and air are still in the cylinder, causing a 'rock back', turning the engine backwards just as the starter engages.
I also always want to make sure the key is of the type that once it is release from the "Starter crank" position, it has to be turned all the way off before it can be turned to "starter crank" for a second time.

Hi forkinlift,
No the starter does not have a rear mounting bracket on it, it has only the 2 mounting bolts at the pinion end, do you know the part number for the rear bracket or do you have to may an bracket to suit, thanks for your help.

Hi,
This will be a GM3.0L piece of s**t engine.
Has the starter got a support bracket fitted to the rear?
The starter motor mountings on these are such a poor design and always give problems. We have had a few break the corner of the block when they have worked loose. Its not just the 4 cyl engine that has this problem, its the 6 and 8 also.
