Discussion:
intermittent charging issue

hello all, I have a Hyster H50XM, s/n: H177B56725C that makes me want to set fire to it. Here's the skinny: it starts & runs just fine, but while it's running, the charge rate will occasionally drop off to 12 volts. It will come up to 14.2 if you floor the accelerator, but it will eventually drop back. I have an operator on this beast who is inattentive at best, so he keeps running it, oblivious to the charge indicator in the dash which results in an undercharged battery, jumpstarts, etc. So far I have replaced the alternator, had the new one bench tested, new battery, checked & cleaned all the engine & chassis grounds, checked every part of the wire harness I could get to for corroded pins or worn insulation, checked for voltage drops and high resistance throughout the charging system. I'm at my wits end here, and any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

went back at this yesterday, & crawled over the wire harness with a fine toothed comb. I found a single wire running down to a sensor on the bottom of the tranny that had slightly worn through between the tranny & the chassis. Repaired the wire, and all is right with the world. Thanks to all of you for your suggestions!

you may need to add a ground cable from the frame to the motor, you can add a jumper to see if that works for you.

The belt is brand new, and I can't turn the alternator without trying drag the crank along for the ride, so grip on the pulley is good. I hadn't thought to check that, though, so thanks!

Could the fan belt be slipping? Maybe try putting a wrench on the alternator pulley nut and see if the belt has good grip in the pulley.

Bluetooth is named after the 10th-century Viking king, Harald Bluetooth, who united warring tribes in Denmark and Norway. In 1997, Jim Kardach from Intel gave the name to the technology because of its ability to unite different communication protocols, just as Harald united various tribes.
