Hyster H50XL:
Hyster H50j

Hi all,

I'm completely new to forklift trucks so apologies in advance for my lack of knowledge.

I've purchased an Hyster H50j 1983 serial# F003A02645D which ran ok on a concrete yard when I went to view it but on getting it back to my yard which is a bit rough it struggled in the ruts and on a shallow incline. The engine runs great and the mast lifts OK.

So far (after looking through discussions primarily on here) I have dismantled the inching valve and replaced seals, that seemed to give a slight improvement, but not managed to get hold of a gauge to test pressures yet.

Took the front wheels off to clean the breaks as the seller said he felt they were binding a bit, wheels turned by hand afterwards but on putting back on the floor and trying again seemed to have less go than before?

Emptied the hydraulic tank and transmission (I think... the casing between the engine and the differential?) as it was suggested that the wrong oil might be an issue. I have found a filter set inside the hydraulic tank. This contained quite a lot of silvery swarf which was suggested by a local tractor centre might be the remnants of an hydraulic pump that possibly failed in the past and not been cleaned out properly? I've ordered a new filter. The supplier said there should also be transmission filter but I've not been able to find one? any indication of it's location (if it has one) would be great.

Other discussions suggest a clutch pack or torque converter problem but I think these may be beyond my abilities.

Thank you in advance for any help.

After a couple of days of use things are progressively improving, I assume to the new oil flushing out the sysytem.

It now has an issue in which when you press the drive forward or reverse nothing happens but when you work the steering it starts to drive??

Any suggestions please??

Thanks

So I've reassembled the filters filled with fresh oil and it seems to have improved things about 20% It still takes time to get going but seems to be going better once on the move.

There was a filter bypass in the filter assembly and the filters were rather clogged so I think there is a chance that some of the swarf that I found in the filters may have got through the system. Could this have got to the pedals and blocked the flow of oil through the switches or to the inching valve or anywhere else for that matter?

I'm going to try to get hold of a pressure gauge to test the pressures at the inching valve are there any other areas I can test while I have it?

Thanks.

Thanks for that, I've found the main filter in the hydraulic tank. When I ordered a new one they said there should be a trans filter but obviouly not.

Thank you.

I believe this truck uses the hydraulic fluid. The only filter is the one in the hydraulic tank.

Does anyone know if this truck has a transmission oil filter and if so where it's located?

Thanks.

The motor is running fine. Something is preventing the wheels driving? May well be a slipping trans? Is there any way to diagnose it being a trans problem?

Thanks.

Is the motor lugging and not reving up when trying to go up an incline or is the motor running fine and the trans is slipping?
