Discussion:
brake/clutch adjustment

Hello,
I have a well used Hyster S50XL and I'm trying to adjust the sensitivity of the clutch/brake pedal. The lift has a single brake pedal, with what I think has an "inching" function. Currently, when you let off the brake, the wheels engage and the lift sort of lurches forward. Someone told me that there is an adjustment that can be made so that the transition between braking and wheel engagement is smooth, and not jerky. I've looked around the valve assembly that controls fwd/rev via a couple of electric solenoids controled by the throttle pedal. This assembly also has a piston which is controlled by the brake pedal (it is separate from the brake master cylinder). I cant find any adjustment screw or mechanism to adjust fluid flow from this piston. I found what looks like a small filler hole with a plug in it located directly behind the piston in the assembly, and there is no obvious sign of fluid inside. Should this have fluid in it? Is there some adjustment that can be made?

Any info helps. Thanks

there isn't any adjustment on the valve block for the inch piston the only adjustment is by adjusting the linkage length not the master cylinder rod length but make sure the brakes are adjusted correctly before you adjust this. The inch should engage just as the brakes start to bite. One thing to check are the springs ok on the inch spool and the modulation spools??? I have had problems with them in the past also what oil is in the transmission lots of people put red Dexron 2 Atf oil in them it should have a JD40 spec oil which is normally brown The filler hole you found isn't a filler hole its a pressure test port

You may have to adjust the rod which actuates the master cyl. If you increase the travel for the brakes to function, then you may be able to achieve what you're after.

The piston is actuated by a rod to the brake pedal, but there is no adjustment in it, its just a linkage.

An adjustment of when it goes from neutral to drive is what I'm looking for, as if I could adjust it so it went to drive when there is still a significant load on the brakes, it would accomplish what I want... i.e. the trans would engage before the brakes are released, and then a slow release of the brakes would let the machine slowly start to move.

I'll check to see if there is any other way to adjust that piston in relationship to the brake pedal.

Thanks for the response!

On your truck- how is the piston (controlled by the brake pedal) actuated? On the H80XL I service there's an adjustable rod between the brake pedal & the piston you mention. The adjustment is in the length of the rod.

The rod only adjusts when the trans goes from "neutral" to "drive". It doesn't adjust the transition smoothness. What engine rpm is present when using the brake/inching pedal. It's designed to be used at idle- around 750 +/- rpm.
