I'm having same issue. 7 series Toyota. Only runs with key in start position. Also I've noticed battery voltage at oil pressure sender wire(when disconnected). Seams strange to me!
I'll check ground to alt. housing and tack signal wire tomorrow and report back.
Yes they do.
Replaced distributor & unit still won't run normally.
Let me ask this: When you turn the key switch just to the run position, do your oil light and other lights work on the instrument monitor?
have you checked for resistance drops across keyswitch and other related components like that relay?
a simple continuity check and volt drop check would tell you if your loosing it across those circuits
We have checked all relays starter and fuel shut off and verified the ground wire to the cylinder head and black shielded wire from distbutor to controller
i had similar once it was the relay for the solenoid. its just a denso airconditioning relay for a car.
I too have had that symptom from a broken tach signal wire. The fuel solenoid shuts off as soon as you release the key from the start position.
It appear to be original distributor on the lift im looking at the tach signal wire broken or the ground somewhere
I had the exact same symptoms & the cause was a faulty distributor. Was the dist. changed recently? I found out the hard way that only a factory dist. will work- aftermarkets give the symptoms you're experiencing. (Right down to the fuel solenoid not getting power except for when ign. key in start position).
Keyswitch was checked and came out okay - but we replaced it anyways. Working on some more wiring this morning - I'll post a reply if we find anything - we will be checking all possibilities stated by you guys
with all these suggestions flying around nobody has suggested to check and or replace the key switch?
that was my first thought....
of course it could be a fuse or a relay problem too ;o)
just some thoughts.....
If memory serves me right there is a relay by the fuse panel the sends the power to the fuel sol. I have run into issues with them before.
We did not find any shielding braid touching any newly spliced wires.
However, double checked wiring & noticed no power going to fuel shutoff solenoid unless the key is in the START position only. (#3pos)
Yeah, if even a single strand of the shielding braid gets included in a splice of the tachometer signal wire, well like I already said.
Thanks a bunch for the input - we will start troubleshooting this issue now - as the distributor connector was actually broken and we put butt connectors on it for now as a temporary fix - which may very well be our issue.
Check the wire harness that serves the distributor.
That is a 2 wire cable with a layer of shielding over the 2 insulated wires. Inside, one wire is ignition feed to the distributor. The other wire is the tachometer signal wire which leads away from the distributor.
If the ignition feed wire breaks, the engine will not start at all.
If the tachometer signal wire breaks, the engine will do exactly as you state........run only as long as the key is in the cranking position.
The wires usually break at, or near the distributor harness connector.
A replacement connector for the harness can be obtained from Toyota, part # 90957-U9011-71.
If you think you can splice repair the broken wire, be very careful not to let even a single strand of the shielding wire braid get into contact with your splicing. The shielding wire is grounded to the chassis and if you short the tach signal wire to ground it will still behave like it does now.
