I had the exact same symptoms & the cause was a faulty distributor. Was the dist. changed recently? I found out the hard way that only a factory dist. will work- aftermarkets give the symptoms you're experiencing. (Right down to the fuel solenoid not getting power except for when ign. key in start position).
